Anybody who knows me will tell you I’m obsessed with TV, it’s pretty much a full-blown passion of mine. I would say that one of my favourite hobbies is binge-watching TV shows, and although I’ve watched too many to count over the years, I definitely have my favourites. TV’s, of course, play a major part in making any TV show extra impressive. I’m currently totally obsessed with the UHD TV Panasonic*, that not only has 4K, so will make anything you watch look outstanding, but also has a super chic and modern design too – it looks awesome even when it’s not turned on!
Since I have so many different favourite TV shows I’ve split them into two categories: dramas and comedies. I also have a couple of honourable mentions to include, because you can never have too much TV! So without further ado, here’s my list.
I was seriously late to the game with Dexter, but it quickly became one of my all time favourite shows. It’s all about a serial killer who only kills other killers – it’s totally incredible and there’s not even a bad season! I’m still hoping that they bring it back soon, I can’t cope without it!
Lost is definitely my favourite show ever, I’ve watched the show three times and it never fails to thrill me (and make me cry like a baby) – it’s basically about a group of plane crash survivors lost on a mysterious and powerful island, and it’s totally insane in the best possible way. This is the show that I make all my friends watch and they totally fall in love with it too, plus the finale is the most beautiful finale I’ve ever seen – ignore the haters, it’s not all a dream.
Bates Motel is a true masterpiece of a show; the acting is phenomenal, the writing is superb and the soundtrack is perfectly old school-creepy. Although it’s just had its final ever episode, I would still highly recommend watching the entire show – it’s a prequel to the film Psycho but set in the modern day, it’s incredible and unlike anything else.
HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER
One of the few dramas I love that is still ongoing, How to Get Away with Murder is consistently shocking and makes you totally want to study criminal law, plus it stars Viola Davis who is an absolute queen. The name of the show pretty much sums it up, it’s about five criminal law students and their professor who get caught up in a serious murder plot – it’s totally awesome and you should definitely check it out if you haven’t already.
I’ve been watching Supernatural from the very beginning, and twelve seasons on I’m still here. If you love anything paranormal or supernatural (hence the name) you’ll love this, it’s all about the Winchester brothers who work together to hunt down monsters and demons. It’s funny, dramatic, shocking and emotional all at the same time – totally worth a watch if you’re into this kind of thing.
PARKS AND RECREATION
Parks and Recreation (or Parks and Rec for short) is one of the most hilarious, feel-good shows out there. Nothing makes me laugh out loud the way this does, and the characters are all so amazing and funny in their own way. It follows the story of the Parks Department in the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana – specifically the character of Leslie Knope, played by the incredible Amy Poehler. I’d especially recommend the episode ‘The Comeback Kid’, it’s seriously the funniest thing I’ve ever seen.
Who doesn’t love Friends? It’s obviously one of the best comedy shows of all time, and although it’s been over 20 years since it first started it’s still incredibly current. I don’t even think I need to explain what this show is about – I don’t know anybody who hasn’t watched and loved Friends, but if you’ve been living under a rock you definitely need to check it out.
Black-ish is a slightly newer comedy, all about the life of an upper-middle-class African-American family. This makes me laugh hysterically – there’s never not a funny episode, and all of the characters are equally awesome. I can’t recommend this show enough, if you need a good laugh definitely check this out!
Modern Family has been going on for eight seasons now but still remains totally hilarious. It’s filmed in a mockumentary style – similar to The Office – and follows the lives of Jay Pritchett and his family, including his adult son and daughter and their families. It’s seriously worth watching if you haven’t already – it’s incredibly relatable which only makes it more funny!
Bob’s Burgers is an animated sitcom about the Belcher family and their burger restaurant. The characters are brilliantly weird and the writing is often hilariously bizarre, it’s the perfect kind of immature comedy (butts are often mentioned) that is right up my street! I really think this is one of the best animated comedies out there, and I definitely recommend you try it out.
THE WALKING DEAD/FEAR THE WALKING DEAD
If, somehow, you have no idea what these shows are about, they’re basically both set in the zombie apocalypse and tell the story of groups trying to survive. The Walking Dead starts almost two months into the zombie apocalypse, whereas Fear The Walking Dead begins a little before the zombie apocalypse begins and follows a different group of characters. Both The Walking Dead and it’s spinoff show are equally awesome and intensely jumpy – if you scare easy then these shows might not be for you.
There was so much hype around this show when it was first released, and for good reason – it’s totally amazing. Set in the 1980’s, it’s super sci-fi and focuses on the disappearance of a young boy among the mysterious supernatural events occurring in the town. The acting in it is amazing and the kids really hold their own, it also has Winona Ryder in which makes it extra awesome, you seriously have to binge it on Netflix if you haven’t already.
Another amazing Netflix show, 3% is a Brazilian dystopian thriller where people have the opportunity to leave the slums and move to the more progressive Offshore through a series of tests, but only 3% of candidates succeed. It’s really interesting and often super tense, I definitely don’t think enough people are talking about this and it’s an absolutely incredible show. Go binge it on Netflix now!
Everybody was raving about how amazing Breaking Bad was and I totally see why, it’s an incredible show. I didn’t think it would be my kind of thing at all, but how wrong I was! Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul are absolutely amazing in it, and the writing is truly incredible – if you haven’t watched this, I can’t recommend it enough.
If you like Dexter, you’ll love The Following – it follows FBI Agent Ryan Hardy who is called in to find serial killer Joe Carroll after he escapes from Death Row. The character of Joe Carroll is especially interesting, think Ted Bundy meets Charles Manson, and the writing is totally awesome. Although the last season doesn’t really live up to the first two, it’s still well worth a watch.
BIG LITTLE LIES
This show is seriously new and it’s already made it into my favourites – that shows you how good it is. Not only is the cast incredible (from Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman to Laura Dern and Adam Scott), it’s a visually stunning show with the most amazing soundtrack. The story is also insane, it’s basically a murder mystery set in Monterey, California – I’ve already watched the show twice since it came out and I’m completely obsessed.
So those were my favourite TV shows – I know, there were a lot of them! I hope you enjoyed this post and that it helped you find a couple new shows to watch, let me know in the comments what your favourite TV shows are and maybe I’ll check them out! See you next time,
