High End Concealer Showdown

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen me recently testing out quite a few concealers in order to find the perfect one. I’ve been putting five different concealers to the test for just over a month, and I’m finally at a place where I can rank them and give you guys my full opinions.

I personally think it can be extremely difficult to find the perfect concealer for your skin type, especially with the range of finishes and consistencies, so I hope this post will make finding the perfect concealer easier for you!

Swatches L-R: Charlotte Tilbury ‘The Retoucher’, NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer, Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer, NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, Smashbox 24 Hour Waterproof Concealer

LAST PLACE

URBAN DECAY NAKED SKIN WEIGHTLESS COMPLETE COVERAGE CONCEALER IN ‘FAIR NEUTRAL’ – £19

I know this concealer is a cult favourite for many, but it just doesn’t work for me. Although it claims to be full coverage I actually find that it blends out almost into nothing when I apply this, and I need to use a colour corrector under this if I want any coverage at all.

The worst thing about this concealer for me is that it’s so drying, it clings to any texture I have under my eyes and actually makes me look more tired and haggard. It also smells really strongly of paint, which is slightly concerning for me as I have super sensitive skin and lots of chemicals can really irritate me, although I luckily haven’t had any reaction to it.

Another complaint I have is the shade range, this is a little too light for me but the next shade up is way too dark. I have to say, the packaging is gorgeous and the price isn’t bad for a high-end concealer, but I actually sort of hate everything else about it. If you have oily/combination skin this might work out better for you, but I’d definitely recommend that dry skin types stay away.

THIRD PLACE

SMASHBOX 24 HOUR WATERPROOF CONCEALER IN ‘LIGHT/NEUTRAL’ – £20

Despite the fact that I’ve put this concealer in third place, I actually really love it – I even put it in my April Favourites! The only reason that this isn’t higher up in the ranks is because I wish it had a little bit more coverage, but I actually love using this for ‘no-makeup’ makeup days during the summer because of how natural it looks.

My absolute favourite thing about this concealer is that it doesn’t crease at all – you don’t even need to set it! It also is super long-wearing without being drying, I would actually say it feels quite moisturising! The packaging is pretty basic but still sleek, and the applicator gives you the perfect amount of product.

The shade I got is a little dark for me normally but works perfectly when I have a tan, and I find that their shade selection is a lot better than Urban Decay’s. I honestly think that this concealer would work for any skin type because it doesn’t budge at all but it’s also not drying, I especially would recommend this if you prefer more lightweight, natural-looking concealers.

JOINT SECOND

CHARLOTTE TILBURY THE RETOUCHER IN ‘1 FAIR’ – £25

I know I’m technically cheating by putting two concealers in second place, but I love them both equally and for very different reasons!

This concealer to me is everything I had hoped the YSL Touche Éclat would be. It’s brightening and lightweight but has great coverage and barely creases. I do recommend that you set this concealer as it could otherwise slip around and wear away quite easily, but when set this concealer is pretty long-wearing.

The packaging is absolutely stunning, as per usual for Charlotte Tilbury, and it’s super easy to twist the bottom of the tube to disperse the perfect amount of product. I really love this concealer for lighter makeup days when I want to look natural but still want to wear makeup, and this has a gorgeous, skin-like finish. It’s also super easy to blend in with your finger for fast, effortless makeup – I just love it so much!

I probably wouldn’t recommend this concealer for oily skin because it is very moisturising and might slip around too much, but normal and dry skin types would absolutely love this.

NARS RADIANT CREAMY CONCEALER IN ‘VANILLA’ – £23

This concealer has been a holy grail of mine for the longest time, I’ve gone through so many tubes of this stuff and I absolutely love it. I honestly can’t believe that this hasn’t made it to first place, but that’s not to say that this isn’t amazing because it totally is.

No other concealer I’ve tried has had as much coverage as this, it seriously covers all my dark circles with one swipe and blends into the skin beautifully. It has a really natural, skin-like finish because of how creamy it is, but although it’s hydrating it doesn’t slip around and would definitely work for all skin types.

This is super long-wearing as long as you set it, but I actually find that I have to bake whenever I use this because otherwise it creases like crazy! I don’t find that too much of a problem though, especially as I tend to only use this concealer under my eyes if I’m going full glam. It is incredibly amazing for spot concealing, you only need the tiniest amount to make any blemish completely invisible.

Although this concealer didn’t make it to first place, I still absolutely love it and will definitely be repurchasing this over and over again.

FIRST PLACE

NARS SOFT MATTE COMPLETE CONCEALER IN ‘VANILLA’ – £23

I’m actually pretty shocked that this turned out to be my favourite concealer. When I first saw it I thought that it would it would never work for me because it’s a thick, matte pot concealer that is clearly targeted at oily skin types, but how wrong I was!

This concealer is surprisingly hydrating, so despite the fact that it’s matte it doesn’t cling to any dry patches. It’s also not quite as full coverage as I originally thought, don’t get me wrong the coverage is great, but it doesn’t have that cakey, powdery finish that most pot concealers have.

I surprisingly love this for lightweight makeup days because it gives me the coverage I need whilst still looking natural, but it also transitions well into a heavier makeup look. I just dab this under my eyes with my finger and anywhere else that needs a bit of concealer and I’m good to go – I don’t even need to set it! The shade selection is great as per with NARS, and the pot is an awesome size and weight to easily travel with.

There isn’t a single thing that I don’t like about this concealer, I really think it would be the perfect concealer for all skin types and I’m so happy that I took a risk and tried it out – it definitely paid off.
