Restyling summer dresses for A/W

The transition into A/W isn’t always the easiest, and we often find ourselves buying piles upon piles of chunky knits and cosy layers to keep us warm during the cold months.

I think a lot of people find these months the most fun for fashion, because there are so many opportunities to layer and create interesting outfits, but it also encourages fast fashion.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve bought into this so many times – wanting to shop the A/W trends, feeling like I need to replace my entire knitwear collection. Of course, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with purchasing new staples, but I think we all agree we should stop going quite as overboard with our shopping habits for the sake of the planet.

To help you style a little more sustainably this season, I’ve put together a few outfits using some of my favourite dresses from summer – because who wants to wear an outfit for only one season a year anyways?

Almost everything I’ve paired these with are old A/W pieces from my wardrobe (bar the exception of a couple of boots, because mine were in dire need of replacing) – I’m trying really hard to only shop when I need rather than want, so hopefully this will help me too!

Tights & Knee Highs

The easiest way to transition a summer dress into A/W is by chucking on a pair of tights and some knee high boots – bonus points if you get a jumper in there too. It’s a classic for a reason, and it’s such a great way of restyling your summer dresses.

Try playing around with colour combos if you fancy brightening things up, but I think you can never go wrong with a good black and tan.

All of these pieces are last season or older except the boots, which you can find here.

Simple Cardi

When in doubt, throw on a cardigan. I love cardigans – they’re the absolute easiest way to make all of your S/S pieces work for A/W, and they’re super cosy too!

If you’re brave enough to attempt a bare leg, a mini dress with ankle boots is such a cute look, but you can always add some tights for the chillier months!

Hats & Midis

A midi (or even maxi!) dress is probably one of the best staple pieces you can have in your wardrobe – it’s literally perfect for every season. It’s long enough that you won’t completely freeze, but still lightweight enough for when the weather gets warmer.

I always end up wearing my midis and maxis way into the winter months by just adding a cosy jumper and a belt – it’s truly the easiest way to transition any summer pieces you have. For extra points throw on a hat, because nothing screams autumn chic more than that.

Tunic Tucks

One of my favourite tricks is tucking in my looser dresses and transforming them into a blouse – such a simple hack but so effective! This is obviously a little more difficult to achieve with fuller dresses, but if you have any slips/tunics laying around they will work perfectly.

For a super vintage look, I love to pair the ‘blouse’ with some wide leg jeans, but you can switch it up with any kind of trousers – or even skirts! – that you like.

I hope you guys enjoyed this post and are inspired to shop your own wardrobe, let me know which your favourite look was! See you next time,

A x
