I’ve been hearing the term ‘Double Cleansing’ being thrown around for a couple of months, but I was a little sceptical of how important it really was. I mean, if you’ve already cleansed your face once then why do it again? But after some research I started to really see the benefits, and after noticing that cleansing my skin once still left behind residue that I found on a cotton pad whilst toning, I decided to give it a go myself. I’ve only been double-cleansing for a few weeks now, but I can already see my skin improving! So let’s get on to the details.
What is it?
Double cleansing is a relatively new (to me at least) skincare technique which involves cleansing your skin twice before moving on with the rest of your skincare routine. Typically you use an oil-based cleanser first to remove makeup and sebum, then go in with a water-based cleanser to actually clean the skin. The double cleansing technique ensures that you are cleansing way down deep into your pores as opposed to only removing your layer of makeup.
What are the benefits?
Constant use of this technique will make your skin clearer and brighter, as well as less prone to breakouts, as you are removing all your makeup first and then cleansing deeper into the skin. Plus, double cleansing softens the skin, allowing serums and moisturisers to be absorbed easier and work better.
How do I do it?
Double cleansing only needs to be done in the evening, so you don’t have to worry about your morning routine becoming even longer! For the first step I like to use either my Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish or just simple coconut oil to melt away and remove my makeup, using a warm, damp muslin cloth to wipe off the product. I then either use my Bioré Charcoal Cleanser on my No7 Face Brush to really cleanse deep into my pores or a gentle milk cleanser (I use the L’Oréal Skin Perfection Milk Cleanser) to remove any excess oil and make sure my skin is as clean as possible. I only use my No7 Face Brush every other day as exfoliating daily irritates my skin, however if you aren’t particularly sensitive then you can do this daily for amazingly clean skin.
Although there have been days when I could only be bothered to cleanse once (give me a break, I’m only human!), I have been double cleansing the majority of the time and I have seen a vast improvement in my skin, almost immediately! I would definitely recommend giving double cleansing a try if you haven’t already, it’s a pretty simple extra step to add to your skincare routine, and your skin will definitely thank you for it.
I hope you enjoyed this post! Let me know in the comments if you plan on trying double cleansing, or if you’ve been doing this for years and I’m just super behind the times! See you next time!
